In memoriam, Hanafi Rustandi

The ITF (International Transport Workers’ Federation) sadly announces the death of Hanafi Rustandi, its Asia Pacific region chair and president of Indonesian seafarers’ union the KPI (Kesatuan Pelaut Indonesia).

Hanafi died suddenly last night in Tokyo, where he was part of the ITF delegation representing the world’s seafarers and dockers at a meeting of the International Baragaining Forum (IBF). Hanafi was 72 years old.

ITF president Paddy Crumlin stated: “Farewell brother Hanafi, small in stature and giant at heart. Seafarer, trade unionist, labour leader and internationalist. Much loved. Man of humour, deep faith and family. Now at rest after Fighting from the Front to his last.”

ITF general secretary Steve Cotton added: “It feels unbelievable that such a vibrant and ever-fighting personality is no longer with us. We grieve for him, and for his family, friends and union members. Hanafi was a battler for what he believed in. Right to the end he never deviated from that path.”

We are very shocked and absolutely devastated to hear of the sudden death of our dear friend, Bro. Hanafi Rustandi. On behalf of all Japanese ITF affiliates, I would like to extend our deepest sympathy to his family and KPI members in their great loss. Our thoughts have been with you almost continuously since we heard the sad news. He was a person who always had a smile on his face, and also had strong determination and courage to make differences for working men and women. He was committed himself to improving conditions of not only Indonesian seafarers, but also transport workers around the globe. He had the respect and admiration of transport workers in Japan. May he rest in peace. In deepest sympathy,

I have been stunned by the news of untimely demise of brother Hanafi. President of ITF Asia pacific region, the labour leader from Indonesia Hanafi died this morning during the union's activity in Tokyo which has disheartened the entire ITF and its member unions. I had the pleasure of meeting brother Hanafi during the last Asia pacific regional conference in Tokyo. Hanafi was continuously engaged in union activities. Me and my union ITWAN respect the contribution of brother Hanafi towards the trade union movement. My deepest sympathies to all and heartfelt condolences towards brother Hanafi.
